When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos? A Simple Guide for New Parents
One of the first questions many new parents ask when planning newborn photos is surprisingly simple: When should we actually do them?
You may see newborn photographs of tiny, sleepy babies and wonder if there’s a specific window you need to book. You may also be wondering if you've waited too long.
The good news is that newborn photography isn't as strict as it might seem.
If You Love Those Sleepy Newborn Photos
For families who love the classic newborn look such as sleepy baby, tiny details, and those naturally curled-up poses, the first 5–14 days is generally a great time to schedule your session.
During these early days, babies tend to sleep more and naturally stay in the curled-up positions they've been used to since before birth.
This can make it easier to capture some of those sweet, peaceful newborn portraits.
If possible, we recommend planning your session around your due date rather than waiting until after your baby arrives to start looking for a photographer.
But What If Your Baby Is Older?
This is where we want to reassure you: you haven't missed your opportunity.
Babies don't follow photography schedules.
Some arrive earlier than expected. Some take their time. Some families need a few weeks to settle into their new routine before they feel ready for photographs.
And that's completely okay.
An older newborn may be more awake during their session, which means you might capture more eye contact, expressions, stretching, and those little moments of personality beginning to emerge.
Your photographs may look different from the traditional sleepy newborn portraits but different doesn't mean less beautiful.
What Happens If Baby Needs a Break?
Expect breaks.
Newborn sessions tend to move at the baby's pace, which means there may be time for feeding, changing, rocking, and plenty of cuddling.
There's no need to apologize if your baby wakes up or becomes unsettled.
In fact, those pauses often give us some of the most natural photographs of the session.
A parent soothing their baby.
A tiny hand reaching for Mom.
Dad holding baby close while everyone waits for another sleepy moment.
These are all part of those early days.
Do You Need to Prepare Your Baby?
Not as much as you might think.
A well-fed baby is usually a happy place to start, so feeding your little one shortly before the session can be helpful. Bringing extra diapers, a pacifier if your baby uses one, and anything else that helps them feel comfortable is also a good idea.
Beyond that, you don't need to worry about getting everything exactly right.
Your baby doesn't need to sleep on command.
You don't need to know how to pose them.
And you certainly don't need to be an expert at newborn photography.
That's what we're here for.
When Should You Book Your Photographer?
Because newborn sessions are usually planned around a baby's arrival, it's best to reach out during pregnancy.
You don't need to know your baby's exact birth date. Your photographer can reserve a spot around your estimated due date and adjust the session once your little one arrives.
This also gives you time to talk about the style of photographs you want, whether you prefer a studio session, an in-home experience, or something more lifestyle-focused.
So, What's the Best Time?
If you're looking for classic sleepy newborn portraits, the first two weeks are often ideal.
But there's no rule saying your photographs have to happen within that window.
Your baby might be two weeks old, four weeks old, or somewhere in between. What matters is finding an experience that works for your family.
And if you're a new parent reading this while holding a baby who has decided that sleep is optional today, take a breath.
You don't have to have everything figured out.
Newborn photography should be one of the easy parts.
We'll make room for the feeding breaks, the cuddles, the unexpected awake moments, and everything else that comes with having a brand-new person in your life.
Whenever you're ready, we'll be there to capture this chapter with you.
