What Should I Wear for my Professional Headshots: Atlanta Headshot Day

I am so excited for our upcoming Headshot Sessions on May 20th in our Atlanta Studio! One of the hardest parts about getting headshots done is deciding what to wear. So I’ve put together some principles to keep in mind when you’re choosing clothing for your portrait session. These are guidelines based on my experience of what clothing looks best in photographs; however, the most important thing is to choose clothing that you’re comfortable in and that represents you and/or your brand.

Dressing for Headshots:

DoN’t

  • Choose anything uncomfortable or that prevents free movement

  • Choose clothing with large logos or text

  • Wear outfits with busy patterns.

  • Wear colors very similar to your skin tone

  • Dress overly dressy or too casual for the industry you represent

Do

  • LAYER!!!! Layers photograph VERY well and allow for versatility

  • Accessorize. Minimal jewelry and hats are perfectly fine.

  • Iron your clothing (Wrinkles will show up in photos)

  • Dress with full length in mind. Some poses may show the top part of your waist.

  • Chose colors that compliment your skin tone

  • Dress with your industry/clientele in mind

  • Avoid clothing with shine that might reflect the light in your photo

  • Refrain from wearing blue light glasses or tinted lenses

  • Arrive dressed for your session so we can get started right on time.

PERSONAL GROOMING TIPS

  • We STRONGLY suggest getting your hair and make up professionally styled.

  • Remember to shave (if desired), manicure your nails and apply lotion prior to the shoot! Poses will include arms and hands.

  • Drink plenty of water and get restful sleep leading up to your session.

  • Remember to groom your eyebrows

  • Choose a hair style that will last for the duration of the shoot without having to be re-curled or styled

  • Choose a style that will not cover your face or take up too much of the photo

  • Make-up should highlight your natural features. Do not overdue the glam unless it makes sense for your industry.
