If you’re like most moms, you are just trying to get over the nausea, fatigue and gut feeling that everything is about to change!! You may also realized the importance of capturing this special time with beautiful maternity photos before your baby arrives.

If this is your first baby or your first time researching maternity photographers, you may have a lot of questions. One of the most important questions that comes up for pregnant moms is “when should I take my maternity pictures?!” Well I’m here to help!

Why take pregnancy pictures anyway?

It may not feel like it now, but pregnancy is a very short time in your parenthood journey. While it’s a hard time, it’s filled with beauty nonetheless. You may or may not ever experience this again. Forgoing maternity photos may feel like a good idea now, but after a few years, you may regret not having this special time documented. Having maternity photos is a wonderful way to celebrate and allows you to always have something to look back on with your baby as the years pass by.

When should I call the photographer to book the session?

Before I share the best time to actually take your maternity photos, I must stress to you to research photographers EARLY! In a recent blog post, I share the most important qualities to look for in a maternity photographer. I suggest you start this process in your 2nd trimester! It may seem early, but several photographer’s calendars fill up months in advance. You want to get your date on the calendar. Additionally, maternity photography ain’t cheap. Booking early, allows you more time to pay for your session if a payment plan is something you’d like to take advantage of. Finally, you will need to plan out wardrobe, hair, makeup and the theme for your session. A good photographer will help you with coming up with these concepts, but they will take time. Booking early ensures that your session meets your expectations!

When should my photoshoot take place?

I suggest that you set your photoshoot date for your 28th-32nd week of pregnancy. This time frame will help you to feel comfortable during your shoot. If you wait too late, you could run the risk of being uncomfortable and limited during your shoot. Here are some other things to consider when deciding on a shoot date:

  • What is the photographer’s turn around time?

  • What important events do you have coming up? - For example if you have a baby shower planned, be sure to give yourself enough time to relieve the photos back before the shower.

  • Are you experiencing tough symptoms? If so, consider holding your session earlier in your pregnancy and share any special needs with your photographer.
